    1. EAST COAST LOW:
    The band’s third album “BADLANDING” is LP of The Year in terms of songwriting and production. The horn section — featuring Pete Kelly, Rudi Thompsonand Rob Parkes — were a mind-blowing dream team at the two gigs we saw at Link and Pin Woy Woy and the Royal Oak. Absolutely splendid.

    2. GIG CITY @ THE BRIGHTSIDE, BRISBANE:
    We have a long history with Brisbane bands, so took a quick trip up north in November to help celebrate 4ZZZ’s 50th anniversary. Unreal performances by The Johnnys, Gazoonga Attack, plus Wayne and Cowboy Bob doing Blowhard/Fredclassics in Coral Outcrop’s Half-Star Band, and Evil Dick Industries. It was ace to see some friendly faces at this ripper venue.

    3. THE SAINTS ’73-’78 @ THE GREEN ROOM, BYRON BAY:
    The Enmore gig was a total trip, but this was a much smaller venue and, being the final show of the tour, it was a band in sync, in love and on fire.

    First, I’ll get the rant out of the way. I’ve spent more time working with younger bands this year and there seem to be a few issues… 

    Firstly, there are so many new young bands that they can’t find gigs… especially appropriate ones. The King Street strip in Sydney’s Newtown and surrounds has about eight venues and on any given night there are only up to 50 people in each room.

    DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS (Metro Theatre):
    It was a long time between drinks but
they finally made it back to our shores and gave the crowd an Alabama
ass-whuppin'for the ages! With 14 studio albums up their sleeves it's
impossible to hear all of your favourite tunes,but it was a wonderful
evening of top-shelf Southern Rock whichever way you slice it.



    CHEAP TRICK/THE ANGELS (Enmore Theatre): 

    A crackin' night of pop-infused rock'n'roll from the get-go. I loved The Angels back in high school but lost interest by the late 80s, so it was a pleasant surprise to hear a
solid set of classics by a rejuvenated lineup now boasting 4 x Brewsters
in the ranks! They'll never have a frontman as great as Doc Neeson, but
they're still a fun night out. Cheap Trick were in top form delivering
hit after hit - if you don't enjoy these blokes you may be in need for a
check-up from the neck up!
