You’ve seen the “Spirits of the Hoey” book, the tribute to Sydney’s iconic Hopetoun Hotel by academics Liz Guiffre and Gregory Ferris, with the photographs of Bryan “Cookie” Cook. Now you can experience the live gig when Petersham Bowling Club hosts “Spirits of The Hoey – A Live Love Letter To The Hopetoun Hotel” on Saturday October 31.

Tickets are expected to sell out long before the event and are on sale here.

Heading the bill is a reformation of Vrag, the band that would morph into Machine Gun Fellatio, with very special guest Christa Hughes on vocals.

  • Archives 1987-92 – Waxworks (Vi-Nil Records)

archives waxworksA collection of songs from the long defunct Sydney band Waxworks. If you're unfamiliar with them (as I was, although I'm well acquainted with singer-guitarist Ed Garland) it's probably worth delving into a bit of background about the inner city Sydney scene at the cusp of the 1980s

Much of Sydney still had a post-Birdman hangover with many bands still chasing that sound. There was a smattering of post-punk and of course heavier punk/hardcore bubbling away in the underground, and the emergence of power pop was gaining the attention of critics and punters alike. There were even a number of Paisley-clad ‘60s garage/psych revivalist bands that were quite popular. And of course pub rock was everywhere.

  • Listening To Gospel Music On The Radio – Moonlight Five (self releseed video single)

"Listening To Gospel Music On The Radio" is the sophomore release from alt blues/country act from Sydney’s northern beaches Moonlight Five. Led by ex-Waxworks and Dwarfthrower frontman and I-94 Bar contributor Edwin Garland (and, no, we won’t hold that last point against him), "Gospel Music" leans heavily into the Tom Waits via-Dylan category, without being derivative.
