Norwegian-American troubadour Mark Steiner’s ongoing love affair with Australia continues in November and December when he undertakes his sixth tour Down Under.
Steiner has been coming to Australian since 2008 and became an Aussieophile when he first heard the music of Rowland S. Howard in in the 1980s when he was a teen growing up in New York City. Now living in Norway, he’ll be playing songs from his latest album, “Black Hole”, on a run through Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide.
A purveyor of swampy, melancholic lounge-noir compositions, Steiner’s commanding voice and dark, sinewy rhythms of electric guitar have been described as “the epitome of a booze-soaked evening in a dirty clandestine bar and an ashtray full of pain.”
His previous album, “Saudade", issued under the name Mark Steiner & His Problems, made it to PBS FM’s Top Ten in Melbourne. The new LP is said to be a step further in the direction of melancholic post-rock fused with a blend of noisy guitars and echoes of dark wave textures.Steiner will be accompanied by his trusted Czech violinist Pavel Cingl, and on *selected Victorian dates by drummer Pange Niemoller, bassist Jeff Hooker and chanteuse Julitha Ryan.
